Something for Wigley to chew over

Good result for Plaid in Thursday's by-election in the Conwy ward of leafy Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, taking the seat from the independents with a 176% increase. This, according to Phil Edwards who won the seat, is down to Plaid's returning hero. "It is clear that the Wigley factor is already coming into play and bodes well for next year," he tells the Daily Post.

Only one slight problem: Wigley's chances of making the Assembly are only marginally better than a snowflake in Hades, thanks to the party's admirable but self-defeating insistence on a woman heading every regional list. The extra 10,000 votes needed for Plaid to secure a second seat on the regional list, secure their existing seats and gain the new Aberconwy seat seems a bit unlikely for an electoral machine as well-honed as a Sinclair C5.

Still, nice sentiment.

If our campaigning machine is really that poor how come we won in Llandrillo yn Rhos? Hardly natural Plaid territory...

September is normally regarded as the start of the political year. In the 12 county council elections across wales since september of last year the votes cast for each of the parties is:

Plaid 3296
Labour 2269
Con 3070
Libs 1473

As we have no opinion polls in Wales the local government by-elections are the only guide to how the parties are doing in elections. Perhaps our campaigning is better than you imagine....

In the past the Lib dems used to be excellent by election campaigners but they are doing very badly..
