Prediction update

Posted by Matt Withers on May 25, 2007 1:54 PM |

Well, Rhodri's back as First Minister leading a minority government as stable as a drunk unicyclist, Plaid are scrapping, the Lib Dems are unsure what they're there for and the Conservatives are feeling smug. It's almost like the election never happened! So while we now look all look forward to tomorrow's special Lib Dem conference, where there's likely to be even more blood-letting than among the Lostprophets fans at The Full Ponty, it's an ideal time to look back at the predictions I made at the start of the year...

1) Wrong, wrong, wrong. By two months. I was correct that nobody stood against Gordon Brown, but, frankly, I wasn't going out on a limb there.

2) A mixed bag here. I was one out on Labour's total - it turned out to be 26 rather than 27 - but it has ended up a minority administration. Marek went. We'll have to see if Rhodri et al see out 2007 in government, but the SNP did triumph up north.

3) Plaid remained the second-largest party in the Assembly, but it was comfortable enough for it not to be "squeaky bum time". Lib Dems did remain static. Their results were poor over in England too, although Sir Menzies is just about holding on - the predictions were for 2007, though, and I don't fancy his chances of seeing that out (as leader, obviously, I'm not predicting his death).

4) Wrong wrong wrong...I don't know what I was thinking of here...

5) This one remains to be decided, and I'm sticking by it. You can still get 7-1 on Harman at good high street turf accountants...
