And the new Secretary of State for Wales is...

...in a surprise move, Paul Murphy. How much of a surprise is this? Well, when Welsh political betting guru Karl Williams gave Betsan Powys his list of runners and riders 11 days ago, his name wasn't even on it. And when I went on Red Dragon this afternoon to go through who might get the job I, er, neglected to even mention him. Oops.

So, what to say about Mr Murphy's appointment? I'm not too sure - so I've just taken this BBC report about Kevin Keegan's return to Newcastle United last week and changed 'Kevin Keegan' to 'Paul Murphy'. What do you know? It seems to work.

Former Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy has made a dramatic return to Wales by agreeing to return to the role.
Murphy, 59, managed the Wales Office from 1999 to 2002 and returns to Gwydyr House as Peter Hain's successor.
David Hanson and Kim Howells were linked with the job in the last few hours but the department turned to Murphy.
The former Northern Ireland Secretary said: "It's nice to be home. I'm delighted to be back."

I did intend to go on, but realised it lost it a bit when it talked about him being "a man regarded with reverence". Still, interesting appointment. Expect to hear lots of use of the phrase "safe pair of hands" in the next day or so.
